Breast Reconstruction: About Your Surgery
What to expect
Surgery planning for any procedure begins with an overall health evaluation to minimise possible surgical risks including:
- a complete history of all health disorders, medications, and allergies
- a possible collaborate with your primary care provider for any additional information
- blood testing and a baseline mammogram for women over the age of 35 or those with a family history of breast cancer may be recommended
Pre-op
Information regarding the following will be shared with you during your pre-operative visit:
- explanation of surgical procedure
- review and discussion on risks and complications
- what to expect after surgery (see next section for some more information)
- there will probably be forms (such as consent forms) to sign
- you will get guidelines for eating, drinking, medications and exercise before and after surgery
- on day of surgery ensure you have arrangements for any required aftercare and/or transportation post-surgery
The surgeon may also share information on incision site, implant placement and implant size/shape/type.
